In this episode I sat down with Dr. Douglas Jowdy, licensed psychologist and author of The Gold Medal Mind. He shares his story of taking adverse life experiences and the lessons they offered him to build a successful life beyond what he could have imagined. 

Dr. Jowdy specializes in sports psychology and other areas in clinical psychology. He worked for the US Olympic Committee and served as the team psychologist for the US speedskating.  Apolo Ohno has written about his work with Dr. Jowdy in his autobiography Zero Regrets: Be Greater Than Yesterday. 

Being a professional athlete was very important to him and the big lessons that have come to him on that journey are valuable and transferable to us all.

D R .  D O U G L A S  J O W D Y
Dr Jowdy, PhD specializes in sport psychology and other areas in clinical psychology. 

He has a private practice in Boulder and Denver, Colorado and holds a faculty appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado Hospital – Denver School of Medicine. 

Here is a snippet of his education, trainings, and associations: 

  • Received his Postdoctoral Training at the Stanford University School of Medicine, 
  • Clinical Internship at Denver Health Medical Center, 
  • MS and PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University, 
  • Participated in a Research Assistantship at the US Olympic Training Center,
  • He served as the assistant coach of Penn State Men’s Ice Hockey Team. 
  • AND he is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the International Society of Neurofeedback and Research and the Caring Clergy Project.  

He worked for the US Olympic Committee and served as the team psychologist for US Speed Skating. Apolo Ohno has written about his work with Dr. Jowdy in his autobiography Zero Regrets: Be Greater Than Yesterday. 

Doug has written books for athletes and non-athletes who want to improve their performance on and off the field, such as… 

  • The Gold Medal Mind: Becoming a Psychologically Skilled Athlete,

  • And a short story titled: The Horse and the Man 

Doug grew up in Niagara Falls, New York and his primary sport was ice hockey. 

And with all that…Doug, a lifelong learner, sees himself as a full-time student at the University of Life.
